WHO WE ARE & WHAT WE DO

The New York City EMDR Trauma Recovery Network (TRN) is a chapter of the EMDR Humanitarian Assistance Program. We are a volunteer network of skilled and licensed mental health clinicians who are EMDR trained, have received additional training in treating first responders, and are committed to serving those who are serving our community.  We provide 6-10 sessions of pro bono EMDR therapy for trauma and stress related symptoms after a local disaster. The New York City TRN formed after the terrorist attacks of 9/11/01, when we served first responders, survivors of the attacks, and family members of those who we lost in the attacks. We also served the NYC community after Hurricane Sandy, as well as in other smaller disasters in the NYC area.

WHAT IS EMDR?

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a psychotherapy approach that was designed to treat trauma, by alleviating the distress associated with traumatic memories. It is a short-term therapy where processing every detail of the incident is not necessary in order to heal and have relief. Research has shown that EMDR is an effective treatment for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). EMDR is a treatment approach which has been empirically validated in over 30 randomized studies of trauma victims and is recommended as an effective treatment for trauma by the World Health Organization, the American Psychiatric Association, and the Department of Veterans Affairs and Department of Defense. Fore more information about EMDR please visit the EMDR International Association website.

OUR MISSION

The New York City Trauma Recovery Network, a part of the EMDR Humanitarian Assistance Program, is dedicated to providing pro bono EMDR therapy to those who have experienced critical incidents, such as first responders (fire, police, EMS), as well as military members, veterans, humanitarian aid workers, and crime victims. Services are provided by trained and licensed EMDR therapists.

We are currently focusing on supporting healthcare workers and first responders on the front lines of providing care to those affected by the COVID-19 virus, under very stressful conditions. We will be providing 6-10 confidential pro bono sessions to those who would like them.  All services will be provided remotely.
